The new composition of the Italian railways is therefore that of a holding with strategic responsibilities, with two enterprises, Trenitalia and RFI (the latter company in charge of railway management). These two entities base their
business skills on specialisation and the precise allocation of roles and duties. For Trenitalia this organisational model has led to the creation of three divisions and an operations unit: Divisione Passeggeri (Passengers), Divisione Trasporto
Regionale (Regional Transport), Divisione Cargo (Goods), Unità Tecnologie Materiale Rotabile (Rolling Stock Technology).
