This collection of articles combines the study of history and the perspective [of] regional development. This gives way to a brand new field of railway culture, which is almost unexamined in Finland. This publication includes research articles from Finnish researchers and from the pioneers of the study of railway history from the UK, China and Russia. The articles are based on the presentations and addresses given in the research seminar 'Railways as an innovative regional factor', held in June 2009 in Kouvola.
